HIFU is generally done as a single session, with a review afterwards, rather than as a course of weekly appointments. The change, where it happens, is gradual: people typically start noticing something over roughly six to twelve weeks as the skin responds, not on the day.

How long any effect lasts is one of the honest unknowns of the treatment. It varies widely with age, skin quality, degree of laxity, lifestyle and sun exposure. Many people look at repeating it somewhere around the twelve-to-eighteen-month mark, but that is a planning assumption rather than a promise, and results vary from person to person.

What the appointment is actually like

The area is cleansed, a mapping grid is often drawn on the skin, ultrasound gel is applied and the handpiece is moved across the area in passes. A full face and neck usually takes somewhere in the region of forty-five to ninety minutes.

Sensation-wise, most people describe brief prickling or heat deep under the skin as each line is delivered, strongest over bonier areas such as the jawline and forehead. It is not painless and we would not describe it as such. Comfort settings can be adjusted during the session, and there is normally little to no downtime afterwards, though some redness or mild tenderness for a day or two is common.

Who it may not suit

HIFU is not right for everybody, and a clinic that books you in without asking is not doing its job. It is generally not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infection or open lesions in the treatment area, or where there are certain implants, metal plates or electronic devices in the region concerned.
