Acne Scars in West Delhi: Types, Treatment Options & How Many Sessions
Acne scars are changes in skin texture left behind after deep or inflamed breakouts. In West Delhi they are usually treated with a planned course, often microneedling, RF microneedling, laser resurfacing, chemical peels or fillers, alone or combined, chosen after a doctor checks your scar type and skin tone. Most people see gradual improvement over several sessions rather than complete removal.
Acne scars vs acne marks: not the same thing
The red or brown spots left after a pimple are flat colour changes (post-inflammatory redness or pigmentation). They often fade with time, sun protection and topical care. Scars are different: they are changes in texture, either dips or raised areas, where collagen was lost or overproduced as the skin healed. Many people have both, and they are treated differently, so the first step is working out which you have. If your concern is mainly dark marks, our guide to pigmentation, melasma and acne-scar options is a better starting point.
The main types of acne scars
Ice-pick scars: narrow, deep openings that can look like large pores. They are often the hardest to improve with surface treatments alone.
Boxcar scars: wider depressions with sharp edges, common on the cheeks and temples.
Rolling scars: broad, shallow dips with soft edges that give the skin a wavy look, often because bands under the skin pull the surface down.
Raised (hypertrophic or keloid) scars: more common on the jawline, chest and back. These need a different approach from depressed scars.
Treatment options a doctor may discuss
No single treatment suits every scar type, which is why plans often combine two or more approaches over several months:
Microneedling: controlled micro-channels that encourage collagen remodelling, commonly used for rolling and shallow boxcar scars. Read more in our microneedling guide.
RF microneedling: adds radiofrequency heat through the needles, which may help deeper texture. See Morpheus8 RF microneedling: sessions and who it may not suit.
Laser resurfacing: fractional lasers treat tiny columns of skin to prompt renewal. Settings need careful choice for Indian skin because of the tendency to darken after heat. Explore our laser and microneedling treatments.
Chemical peels: better suited to shallow texture and the marks that often sit alongside scars than to deep scars. Our chemical peels guide explains the types.
Dermal fillers: can lift some rolling scars for a temporary softening effect.
Subcision and targeted techniques: specialised methods some doctors use for tethered rolling scars or narrow ice-pick scars. Suitability is assessed individually.
Why active acne usually comes first
Working on scars while breakouts are still active can be counterproductive, because new inflammation can leave new scars. If you still get regular pimples, a doctor will usually focus on controlling them first (see our acne treatment guide) and plan scar work once the skin is calmer.
How many sessions, and what to expect
Scar work is gradual. Collagen remodelling takes weeks, so most plans involve a course of sessions spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, with progress reviewed along the way. Downtime depends on the treatment: a day or two of redness after microneedling is common, while laser resurfacing may need a longer recovery. Results vary with scar type, depth, skin tone and aftercare, and noticeable improvement, rather than complete removal, is the realistic goal.
Aftercare that protects your results
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, including indoors near windows.
Do not pick or scrub treated skin while it heals.
Keep to a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and pause retinoids or exfoliating acids around sessions as advised.
Contact the clinic promptly about unusual swelling, blistering or darkening.

Frequently asked questions
Can acne scars be removed completely?
Most acne scars can be improved rather than erased. A planned course can often soften depth and texture noticeably, but some scarring usually remains, and how much improvement is realistic depends on your scar type and skin.
Which treatment works for which type of acne scar?
As a broad guide, rolling scars often respond to microneedling, RF microneedling, subcision or fillers; boxcar scars to microneedling or laser resurfacing; and ice-pick scars to targeted techniques. Raised scars need a different approach. A doctor confirms this after examining your skin.
Are laser treatments suitable for Indian skin?
They can be, when settings are chosen carefully for deeper skin tones and a doctor assesses you first. Indian skin has a higher tendency to darken after heat-based treatments, so conservative settings, a test patch or a staged plan may be recommended.
How long before I see results from acne scar treatment?
Collagen changes build slowly, so most people notice gradual change over two to three months, with further improvement across a course. Photos taken before starting help you judge progress honestly.
